Music has the powerful ability to elicit memories. Personally, I love music that has a lot of vocals. I remember reading an article that said music preference is an excellent indicator to personality type. Specifically, it noted that most people that like vocal heavy music are extroverts. They feel more connected to people through the vocals. I find it’s true for me.

I’m instantly transported back to the dance floor by simply closing my eyes and listening to the powerful vocals of Millennium by Juanjo Martin and Rebeka Brown. In Celebration, Madonna promotes hedonism saying, “if it makes you feel good, then I say do it. I don’t know what you’re waiting for.” I’m reminded to live in the present in “Today is my day” by Tikaro, J.Louis & Ferran. The deep, filthy dirty base of Hoxton Whores “Devil Toy” would make anyone with a pulse bob their head or tap their foot. “Happy House by The Juan MacLean instantly puts a huge smile on my face.

So here they are…

17 dance songs that will forever remind me Summer 2009

The weather has been delightfully hot lately in Barcelona, perfect for hitting the beaches. Through selfless hard work and dedication, I’ve spent a lot of time on Marbella beach to document the various species found on Barcelona’s gay beach. Below is my analysis.

The Aussiebum Daddy – Found wearing a completely age inappropriate swimsuit. SEXY or some other similarly ridiculous phrase is often plastered across the (sagging) ass.

Sexy Spanish Men

The Nudest – Far too comfortable with being nude, which makes everyone else around him/her uncomfortable. Oddly enough, the people that are overweight are almost always the most comfortable being nude.

The Nudest

Steroid Sam – Gay Barcelona is dominated by them. Traveling in tribes, they’re often easily identified by the back acne.

Steroid Sam

The Promos – Found handing out fliers for the latest “not to miss” party. In an effort to get attention, they’re either 1) ridiculously sexy (often gogo’s) or 2) plain ridiculous, although not necessarily in a bad way (think tranny in high heels on the beach)

The Promos

Mr. & Mrs. Confused – Typically middle aged, these tourists have no idea how they ended up on a gay beach. They sit and gawk because they find it too interesting to leave.

The Confused Family

Vendors – They walk along the beach shouting their mantra, “Coca-Cola, Cervesa, Beer, Agua Fria”. Occasionally, they’ll also try to sell you a samosas, fresh coconut or hashish.

Barcelona Beach Vendor

The ‘Masseuse” – “Masaje, masaje!” Five euros will buy you 15 minutes of the most unhygienic massage you’ll have in your entire life. Guaranteed. 10 euro more will buy you a “Masaje total”.

Barcelona Masseuse

The pick-pockets – They’ll all over, so carefully watch your belongings. Don’t say you haven’t been warned.

A few weeks ago I broke down and created a twitter account. My 5 most recent updates will always be displayed on the right side of this blog page, under “Ambient Awareness”. I plan to use it to fill in the gaps and connect the dots between more substantive posts/updates.

Many people strongly dislike the “ambient awareness” that Twitter or and other similar services provide, saying that it’s banal narcissism at its worst. In many case, they’re it’s true. My rational for using twitter is best summed up in a quote from a Wired magazine article.

“Each little update — each individual bit of social information — is insignificant on its own, even supremely mundane. But taken together, over time, the little snippets coalesce into a surprisingly sophisticated portrait of your friends’ and family members’ lives, like thousands of dots making a pointillist painting.”

What do you think of twitter and other forms of ambient awareness?

**UPDATE** Check out the following video that does an excellent job of explaining twitter.
